We at Ausgeknipst often receive inquiries because an analog camera has a defect or needs maintenance. Shutter sticks, light meter malfunctions, lens needs cleaning — the problems are as diverse as the cameras themselves. Since we do not perform repairs, we have compiled this list: 274 repair shops in 29 countries, based on community recommendations and our own research.

Note on the comments: The comments on price & service come from the community and are subjective. They serve as a first orientation. Anyone seriously interested in a service should contact the repair shop directly.

Analog camera repair: Is it worth it?

The honest answer: It depends. Before you send in your camera, you should answer three questions.

How much does a camera repair cost?

The price range is huge. A CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) on a mechanical SLR like the Pentax K1000 typically costs between 80 and 150 EUR. Shutter repairs on a Leica M can quickly cost 200 to 400 EUR. A lens overhaul can range from 100 to 300 EUR depending on the manufacturer and complexity.

As a rule of thumb: If the repair costs more than half the current market value of the camera, it becomes economically questionable. Exceptions are cameras with personal or collector's value.

Which defects can you fix yourself?

Not every defect requires a repair shop. Three of the most common problems with analog cameras can be fixed with minimal tools:

  • Battery problem: The most common cause of a "dead" light meter. Many cameras from the 60s and 70s require the now banned mercury battery PX625 or PX27. Special battery adapters solve the problem permanently for just a few euros.
  • Sticky shutter: For some cameras (e.g. Minox 35), a careful cleaning of the shutter magnet with isopropanol is enough.
  • Cloudy viewfinder / mirror: Fungus on the mirror or focusing screen can often be visibly improved with a soft brush and distilled water.

What should go to the repair shop?

Avoid: aperture repairs inside lenses (oil aperture), shutter curtain replacement (Leica, Canon), electronic defects in automatic cameras, and anything involving adjustment of film transport or mirror mechanism. The workshops listed below have the tools, spare parts, and experience needed for these repairs.
